The Guttural Munk's Top 13 of '13

I dont even deserve any traffic for this post, I've seriously slacked this year. Only 7 measly posts over the last 12 months is pathetic but oh well.

Honestly, if I didn't see JGD over at The Living Doorway make a year end list I was probably going to say fuck it, get depressed and give up the internet completely. Thanks again for the inspiration, again, i guess.

So, I learned next to nothing about my musical tastes this year, I've listened to probably 300+ releases from 2013 and I am still pretty dead set in my ways as far as what I dig and dont dig... Its probably too early to be making this list but if I dont do it now it wont ever get done.

I'm not going to fucking lie and say I'll be back fully in 2014!!! But if you do want to follow me on my daily listening habits you can look me up on RateYourMusic.com, ATPete is my handle over there.

1. Krypts- Unending Degradation

Finland tops my 2013 list in such evil fashion. Just absurdly heavy stuff here. Crushing riffs that stick with you and punish the ears. I listened to this on repeat for weeks after purchasing this disc. Its thick filthy atmosphere will stain you. There is nothing more to be said, just shut up and buy it.

2. Age of Taurus- Desperate Souls Of Tortured Times

As far as catchy riffs and song structure goes it was hard to beat Age of Taurus' debut full length this year. This album got me through a lot of rough times over the last few months. This is true doom metal done extremely well. Fans of Candlemass and Solitude Aeturnus will love this record. By far Metal Blades finest release in some time.

3. Portal- Vexovoid

This album is a sound track to my most paranoid of nightmares. Disturbing sonic torture on my ears. I've never truly called myself a fan of these Aussie chaos bringers but consider me sold. This disc has been in constant rotation for me this year. The absolute driving nature of Vexovoid is comparable to a fucking jet engine heading straight for your face.

4. Grave Miasma- Odori Sepulcrorum

One of the more dark and yet beautiful death metal releases I can remember. Denis Forkas Kostromitin is the fucking man and the choice of artwork that dawns the cover of this album couldnt be more fitting for the disgusting sounds held inside. These UK based occult worshipping fiends have taken over my IPod since this release dropped, this is the stuff that turns a shitty day worse.

5. Gigan- Multi Dimensional Fractal Sorcery and Super-Science

Its no secret that I love music geared towards the narrowest nitch of extreme ears. This album blew my fucking mind the first couple spins and I am far from done with it. Absolutely on my list of purchases as soon as my broke ass goes on a binge again. This US act is crazy technical and has such wondrous song writing and execution. Gigan's best effort to date.

6. Prosanctus Inferi- Noctambulous Jaws Within Sempiternal Night

Speaking of best efforts to date... I've been following this Ohio based beastial devastation squad for a few years now. Red Streams Of Flesh in 2011 perked my ears up for sure. This album went and fucking severed my brain from body. Aggressive, loud and powerful. Look I get the desire for vinyl but I'm not that guy, I cant wait for the CD release to drop in February 2014 (?).

7. Vastum- Patricidal Lust

OK, I'm a huge fan of Paolo Girardi's artwork, the guy is a fucking detail madman! Vastum have released such a killer record this year even if the subject matter is extremely sexually driven in a bizarre kind of way. I'm not at all familiar with 2011's Carnal Law but I guess I need to be. To me this California based band came out of fucking nowhere and made a huge chunk of this years death metal look like absolute shit.

8. Panopticon/Vestiges

A fine line between beauty and destruction. The symbolism of the cover art greatly sums up both bands efforts on this monstrous split. Vestiges take on a more hardcore approach to there side, slower, glacial and doomy yet angry as can be and violently intimidating. Panopticon's half explores an emotional ride over 3 tracks. 'A Letter' may be one of my favorite Austin Lunn tracks to date and the Suicide Nation cover is fucking incredible. On the subject of Panopticon I'd like to add that Kentucky topped my 2012 best of list and this guy has 2 releases in store for 2014 (that we know of...). What a machine. Please though, release this on CD. Again, the vinyl thing...

9. Gorguts- Colored Sands

Me in 2012: Oh cool new Gorguts next year, I bet that will be kind of cool.

Me in 2013: Oh fuck the new Gorguts rules harder than just about everything.

Does Colin Marston ever fucking stop? Oh and while I'm praising, his work on the Geryon EP is phenomenal, basically everything he touches is legit.

10. Lantern- Below
Imprecation- Satane Tenebris Infinita
Vorum- Poisoned Void (Woodcut/Dark Descent)
Craven Idol- Towards Eschaton
San La Muerte- Lip Reading The Dead
etc, etc, etc

This may be considered cheating but I dont fucking care what you think. This is a big wet phlegmy tongue kiss to Dark Descent Records' efforts in 2013. This label can do no wrong. I purchase everything Matt releases on CD with no questions asked. May he and the label just grow stronger and may his taste in music never stray. Looking forward to Lvcifyre, Lie in Ruins, Corpsessed releases in 2014!

11. Immolation- Kingdom of Conspiracy

Me in 2012: The new Immolation album will probably rule.

Me in 2013: The new Immolation album fucking rules.

12. Tribulation- The Formulas Of Death

Sweden's Tribulation has breathed life back into what progressive death metal can be. This album is fucking long but is not a chore to get through. Inventive stuff here.

13. Carcass- Surgical Steel

Me in 2012: a new Carcass record, ugh...

Me in 2013: you really suck, me from 2012

This album fucking kills shit. I couldn't believe how impressive this return was.

Honorable Mentions...

Inquisition- Obscure Verses For The Multiverse
Autopsy- The Headless Ritual
The Black Dahlia Murder- Everblack
Mouth of the Architect- Dawning
Exhumed- Necrocracy

Best Reissues...

Scanner- Hypertrace (1988)
Fulmination- Humanity's Dirge (92-94)
