It Came From The Cove Part 1 - The New Mexikans

The New Mexikans
Kidicarus/Broken Eye
Genre- Hard Rock

So I used to haunt this place called The Cove in Roselle, NJ. Shit, I was only a kid at the time but this was my absolute favorite spot for quite a few years. Every single weekend me and my buds would grab some smokes and a couple bucks and walk over to see a show, no matter who was playing (well... for the most part). The Cove was a cozy venue where bands, both young and established, could play to a small but very engaging crowd. The venue did some amazing things for the NJ/local music scene in the late 90's and very early 00's.

The New Mexikans were one of my favorite bands to go see. This young 4 piece hailed from NYC and brought some major talent. To this day, I think 'Kidicarus' is one of the best songs I've ever heard performed by an unsigned band. And as far as I know they never released a proper full length so I highly recommend checking out these 2 tracks. I've never posted anything like this before, a metal influenced hard rock band with psychedelic vibes. This is a young band that should have been signed in their prime. Give it a shot.

Eulogy- The Essence (1993)

Eulogy
The Essence (1993)
Genre- Experimental Death Metal

Dark and droning, mid paced death metal with a techy edge. Good, creative usage of guest female vocals too, they come across as truly terrifying and never too abrupt. Definitely some outside the box shit here, above average drumming and great artwork too.

Mouth of the Architect- The Violence Beneath (2010)

Mouth of the Architect
The Violence Beneath (2010)
Genre- Technical Progressive Sludgecore

A highly melodic and emotional EP from Ohio's, Mouth of the Architect. I originally purchased this album, fresh from the used bin, solely based on the cover art alone. Previously unaware of the band, I was pleased to find that the material inside was just as intricate, deep and enjoyable. Get ready to be lost in a few long songs that will entrance the mind and scramble your thoughts.. but, fear not, you're sure to snap out of your trip about mid way through the last track, when you begin to curiously sing along. Thinking you're drifting deeper still into your own internal insanity, you then suddenly realize... "oh shit, they've covered a god damn Peter Gabriel song". Anyway, The Violence Beneath is packed with impressive song writing and production, varied vocal styles, folk tendencies and shit tons of encasing atmosphere. Get on this one and support these guys when possible.

Xenocide
Galactic Oppression (2012)

Tight as fuck progressive, technical death metal from Canada. Dont mind the shitty band name, logo and cliche album cover, I promise this release delivers. Check it out for yourself then head over to their facebook page and 'like' these dudes.

Obscura- The Flesh and the Power It Holds (Death Cover)

Obscura
Illegimitation (2012)
The Flesh And The Power It Holds (Death Cover)
Genre- Technical Melodic Death Metal

Obscura is primed and ready to drop another release on the metal world already, only this time it comes in the form of a compilation containing demos from 2003/2006 as well as unreleased tracks from the 'Omnivium' sessions in 2011. Man, that Christian Muenzner is one busy dude. This is the first thing they've leaked so far from those 2011 tracks. Here we have a pretty sweet cover of a great Death song from their 1998 album 'The Sound of Perseverance'. The track quality is only 256kbs for now, if I can find a better one at some point before the album drops, I'll try to update the post. Enjoy this shit, and please guys, buy this album when it comes out. Actually, make it a point to buy a lot of CDs this year if you can. Some of these bands really deserve it.

NEW cd's I've purchased so far in 2012

Aborted- Global Flatline (pre)
Abigail Williams- Becoming (pre)
Antediluvian- Through The Cervix of Hawaah
Autopsy- Severed Survival
Autopsy- Mental Funeral
Autopsy- Macabre Eternal
Decrepit Birth- Polarity
Deicide- Deicide
Disma- Towards the Megalith

Dissonance In Design- Neurotransmitting An Epiphany (2011)

Dissonance In Design
Neurotransmitting An Epiphany (2011)
Genre- Progressive Technical Death Metalcore

Shit. These kids are an all out 3 man wrecking crew. Excellent songwriting and execution. Constant but fluid genre hopping throughout the entire album with influences ranging from melodic tech death done Decrepit Birth style to straight metalcore with some serious thrash worship. Its really pretty awesome stuff. My only minor complaint is the production/mix, other than that since you've ended up at this blog, I highly recommend you check this one out.

Christian Muenzner- Timewarp (2011)

Christian Muenzner
Timewarp (2011)
Genre- Instrumental Progressive Metal

This is some impressive shit right here. Epic, wonderfully constructed and flowing songs that transport the listener through many distant realms and wormholes via guitar wizardry and blastbeats. Think Obscura/Necrophagist meets Dream Theater and Children of Bodom, load up your bong and enjoy this journey into outer space through Christian Muenzner's eyes.

Opeth- My Arms Your Hearse (1998)

Opeth
My Arms Your Hearse (1998)
Genre- Melodic Black Metal/Progressive

This is one of my favorite albums of all time. This is the first Opeth album to feature former Amon Amarth drummer Martin Lopez, who added his components of a jazzy upbeat and almost a Latin flair to the drums, and the classic Opeth sound was complete. This haunting album will please those looking for outstanding musicianship and song writing as well as those looking for a dark, layered wall of sound to get lost in eternally!

Obscura- Cosmogenesis (2009)

Obscura
Cosmogenesis (2009)
Genre- Technical/Progressive Death Metal

Germany's Obscura plays a super fast, ultra technical breed of death metal on this album. The musicianship here is almost second to none, and this album was one of my favorites of 2009. Pounding tech riffs, inhuman drumming, audible jazzy bass lines and harsh low-end vocals all come together to blast the listener. Although it should be apparent upon sampling, fans of the mighty Necrophagist should be aware that Obscura features the outstanding musical talents of both Hannes Grossmann, and Christian Muenzner. This is a must listen.

Out Of Yesteryear- The Blackness (2010)

Out Of Yesteryear
The Blackness (2010)
Genre: uh...see below...

Some ultra tight knit symphonic, progressive, blackened technical-deathcore from Belarus, true story. This album is definitely growing on me quickly, constant blistering transitions, sharp, techy noodling, strong low range barking vocals with the occasional highs layered on there. The keys/symphonic nonsense never become a chore, in fact its use is damn perfect. And come on, fuck, that is some sick cover art right there! For fans of The Faceless and Fleshgod Apocalypse.

The Contortionist- Apparition (2009)

The Contortionist
Apparition (2009)
Genre: Technical Deathcore

Deep, technical guitar wizardry, big beefy breakdowns and miles of progressive build ups. The Contortionist have since risen to elite status after the release of 2010's 'Exoplanet' and rightfully so. Definitely an essential for fans of The Faceless and 7Horns 7Eyes.

Album: Convalescence EP
Genre: Djent, Progressive Deathcore
Year: 2011

1. Convalescence
2. Vindicator

These guys really need to release a full length soon, 7H7E has been one of my favorite new bands over the last 6 months. Deep, punishing and groovy with the most graceful execution, excellent musicianship for sure. Check them out!

The Odious - That Night A Forest Grew (2011)

Artist: The Odious

Album: That Night A Forest Grew

Genre: Progressive Metalcore

Year: 2011

Track Listing:

1. Entmoot

2. Threads

3. Contemplating Utopia

4. Last Night A Forest Grew (Part 1)

5. Last Night A Forest Grew (Part 2)

An unexpected gem upon the sea of metalcore EP's I've heard recently. Recorded in 2010 and released in 2011'That Night A Forest Grew' gripped me from the get go because of the cover art alone. Smart, progressive metalcore, straight up. These guys really took the time to write a memorable EP. Fans of BTBAM and The Contortionist should check this one out.
