So as you know in the very late 90's the "nu metal" genre was so far beyond shit soaked with poser rapping mainstream bullshit that it became all but completely unlistenable. By anyone. As an unfortunate result, the entire field of bands associated with that horrific term had been gifted a terrible rash of reputation through the ranks of the true metalheads. The entire collapse of the 'scene' was especially unfortunate for bands like New Jersey's Intake who in 2000/2001 had a very strong local following and yet zero label attention. It also may have been that they had a much more core influenced sound and well... didn't fucking rap. They showed hints of Pantera mixed with Alice In Chains and a kind of melodic hardcore vibe with the occasional clean vocal. Either way, these kids used to constantly pack The Cove, and Intake nights were always a good time.

The end result is this lost gem. A melodic, high chaos, high energy 'back in the day era' core album that totally doesnt suck. I've still got love for this kind of shit and you should too.

A highly melodic and emotional EP from Ohio's, Mouth of the Architect. I originally purchased this album, fresh from the used bin, solely based on the cover art alone. Previously unaware of the band, I was pleased to find that the material inside was just as intricate, deep and enjoyable. Get ready to be lost in a few long songs that will entrance the mind and scramble your thoughts.. but, fear not, you're sure to snap out of your trip about mid way through the last track, when you begin to curiously sing along. Thinking you're drifting deeper still into your own internal insanity, you then suddenly realize... "oh shit, they've covered a god damn Peter Gabriel song". Anyway, The Violence Beneath is packed with impressive song writing and production, varied vocal styles, folk tendencies and shit tons of encasing atmosphere. Get on this one and support these guys when possible.

Heres a good one for all you hardcore fans. Hell Brigade was a short lived hardcore "supergroup" hailing from both New Jersey (NYC) and Japan. Featuring members of NJ Bloodline, 25 Ta Life, One 4 One, and Everybody Gets Hurt, as well as guest members "Takeshi the Butcher" and "Senor Take" from Japan. The sound is a classic blend of straight forward NJ/NYC HC and East Coast metalcore with a couple breakdowns and plenty of anthemic rhythms. I was lucky enough to check these guys out live and lets just say... you missed out. This is a must have for fans of fun and very obscure hardcore.

What is it with New Jersey and bands named after 90's TV characters? Hack Morris and Danny Tanner are the 2 that come directly to mind. This is not another bullshit joke album though, I promise you, this one is full of well recorded riffage, excellent drumming and lyrics focused around the stupidity of a certain strain of pop culture. To my knowledge this 6 song EP is the only recording ever released. Unfortunately the band Roger Klotz was only around for about a year, luckily I had the chance to catch them at a VFW, great shit. If you like intense floor clearing breakdowns, high energy old school hardcore circle pits and fucking hate the Jersey Shore than this is an absolute must download.

Here ya go, a buddy of mine had requested that I post some Glass Casket up here on the Munk. I decided to do him one better and found the band that would eventually turn into Glass Casket after the release of this 2002 demo. They were called Gadrel and they kicked some serious ass. This 5 song assault touches mainly on the deathy/metalcore bases while still hinting at some of the technical/experimental edge that they were known for after the name change. This is heavy heavy and loaded with lots of sick breakdowns and weedly-weedly guitar work. Its one very cool and often overlooked piece of brutal metalcore. Too bad there was no album cover or even a logo for this release... either way, enjoy.

Dont let the goofy band name/logo and boring album cover fool you, this is an above average technical death metal release from a band hailing from California. They seem to touch on alot of core influence pretty often, most especially in the vocal department. Impressive drumming, solid song writing and a constant blitz of gut wrenching song structure. This is absolutely an band/album worth checking out.

Sometimes bargain bins do hold the occasional hidden gems. The last trip to my favorite record store yielded this blistering 7 song digi from Indiana's Exesion. Dont let the abstract cover art and shitty album title fool you. These are fast, well produced songs, with above average and slightly technical riffage, solid drumming and a beasty, well ranged, vocalist. This shit has a ton of potential but unfortunately it looks like this is the bands only release, even though the metallum has them listed as still 'active'. This is worth checking out for those in need of a death fueled thrashing spin kick from out of fucking nowhere.

A very unique blend of melodic death metal and metalcore with hints at numerous other genres around as well. This one features Adam Wentworth of Premonitions of War and The Red Chord, which is cool. This is a straight blend of melo death and metalcore done very right, they even have a bit of black metal/folk influence about them at times, which is also cool. These tracks have a lot of depth and substance. You guys should give this a shot.

Shit. These kids are an all out 3 man wrecking crew. Excellent songwriting and execution. Constant but fluid genre hopping throughout the entire album with influences ranging from melodic tech death done Decrepit Birth style to straight metalcore with some serious thrash worship. Its really pretty awesome stuff. My only minor complaint is the production/mix, other than that since you've ended up at this blog, I highly recommend you check this one out.

God Forbid's debut and by far their most experimental release. Every song takes on a new style and a life of its own within this classic EP. Even the live songs are sick, this was one of the few EP/Live releases I was able to listen to repeatedly as a kid. The live portion of this one mostly features songs from their follow up 'Reject The Sickness' and a Sepultura cover. This is some brutal shit from a now defunct NJ scene. Very essential stuff.

Perpetual Doom was a death metal band from Massachusetts, they released one demo in '95 and this is it. What's cool here is that it features Phil Labonte, who would go on to work with Shadows Fall and ultimately All That Remains, and also a guy named Steve Gonsalves, who would go on to become one of TV's "Ghost Hunters". And whats even cooler than all that, you ask? This demo really doesnt suck... enjoy.

Man.. when I was a youngin' this was my shit. Throw away every negative notion you currently have about Diecast because this here is the good stuff. Straight up aggressive, bass driven Boston hardcore from the day. Full of memorable samples, catchy vocals and monstrous floor clearing build ups. This EP's personnel is slightly different from that on 2001's 'Day Of Reckoning' in the strings dept, and the songs are also built to be much longer and move at a slower pace at times. This is some must have shit for fans of the early East Coast hardcore/metalcore movement.

These guys hailed from Philly and brought tons of emotion and chaos to the studio and the live show. I'll never forget the first time I saw All Else Failed, it was in 2001 and the singer busted his head up so bad with the mic he had to leave the stage, such a great show. Anyway, these guys were thick in the middle of the now classic Now Or Never Records line up in the early 00's along with Diecast and The Dillinger Escape Plan. This is a great album, love the piano parts.

Now, I dont give a fuck if your band sings about god, satan, parrots or who or what ever... As long as the music is good you'll have my attention. This here is pretty good shit, incredible guitar work arranged in wonderful almost orchestral movements that really dominate the appeal of this album. Sure it can get a little whiney at times but for metalcore fans, most notably, listeners of early 'The Human Abstract' material, this is a young band worth checking out.

I've always had a thing for Darkest Hour, the energy, the riffage, the live show, all really great stuff. I chose to post this one because it contains my favorite Darkest Hour song 'An Epitaph' and because I just scored this classic early 00's metalcore album for only a penny on Amazon (love that shit). So Sedated So Secure is their second relentless full length. Looking back, these guys really owned the genre before bands likes The Absence, The Black Dahlia Murder and Arsis rose to the top. Their Swedish melo-death vibes are pretty awesome, especially on this album.
