Arckanum- Helvítismyrkr (2011)

Artist- Arckanum
Album- Helvitismyrk
Genre- Black Metal
Year: 2011

1. Helvitt
2. Myrkrin Vinna Hefnt
3. Or Djupum
4. In Svarta
5. Nifldreki
6. Svartr ok Þursligr
7. Þrúðgelmis Hlaut
8. Sisiltinn
9. Outro

The raw, dark and ever growing library of Arckanum is beyond essential to any black metal fan. Shamaatae has once again produced a monstrous single handed effort in his latest release, 'Helvitismyrk'. Driving riffs cut through the surprisingly clean production, thick pounding drums, dominating harsh vocals and trance-like points of melody and cleans, in a way very atmospheric and mystical overall. My favorite release since 'Kostogher' but i admit i have not heard last years 'Sviga Lae' yet...

Ah the good old Cryptopsy, better production than 'Blasphemy Made Flesh' although i fucking love that album just as hard. Flo Mounier is a beast, Lord Worm rules. Spin this and remember the good old days, long before 'The Unspoken King'...

8. Dimly Lit Shit Fit

9. Grundle Aversion

I'm a big fan of innovation and I've never heard anything quite like this before. The entire recording is just a guy with a drum machine making noises into a microphone but my god is it fucking brutal. All the guitars are done vocally, creating a whole new untapped genre of noise/grind...

Abiotic- A Universal Plague (2011)

Ulver- Bergtatt: Et Eeventyr i 5 Capitler (1995)

Artist: Ulver
Album: Bergtatt: Et Eeventyr i 5 Capitler
Genre: Ambient Black Metal, Folk
Year: 1995
Label: Head Not Found
More Info: Metallum

1. Capitel I : I Troldskog Faren Vild

3. Capitel III : Graablick Blev Hun Vaer
4. Capitel IV : Een Stemme Locker
5. Capitel V : Bergtatt - Ind I Fjeldkamrene

This is the debut album from one of true pioneers in the black metal genre. Ulver creates a sound that ive heard imitated but never duplicated. The album grips you and never lets go, you find yourself thrust into the mountains, lost, cold and punished by an assault of black metal/ folk fusion genius. The quality of the musicianship here is untouchable and the frightening vocals of the legendary Garm are unbelievable. Ulver has since changed their sound dramatically, i would kill for the chance to see this performed live. This is the best black metal album ever to be written.

Abacinate- Portrayal of the Gray Man (2006)

Artist: Abacinate

Album: Portrayal of the Gray Man

Genre: Death Metal

Year: 2006

From: South Jersey

More: Metal Archives

Track Listing:

1. Far From The Reaches of Medical Attention

2. No Big Deal... Death Always Comes With The Territory

3. The Lips That Never Smile

4. Extension Cord 17

5. Life Is Worth Losing

Here we go kiddies, back from the day of 2006 when these clowns were on high atop the ever growing death metal scene in NJ. Full of beer fueled attitude and littered with offensive audio samples, the sound of Abacinate can be described as aggressive, catchy as fuck and definitely mosh worthy. This was the first official EP and is featuring the original line up. Abacinate is currently on hold due to the passing of new vocalist Jay "Lurch" Sica. RIP.

Decrepit Birth- Diminishing Between Worlds (2008)

Artist: Decrepit Birth
Album: Diminishing Between Worlds
Genre: Technical Death Metal
Year: 2008

Just when you thought you've heard it all, just when you thought the death metal genre was over saturated and may have, dare i say... "peaked", Decrepit Birth pulls out this ace and sets the bar so much higher. Decrepit Birth all but breaks away from the slamming sound of their debut full length 'And Time Begins' and morphs into a much more more technical outfit. Its easy to get lost in the abundance of golden riffs littering this album. This honestly may be the best death metal album of the 00's and one of the best all time. Do not put this off, get this, love it and then, most importantly, go the fuck out and...

So I Shot Myself- So I Shot Myself (2008)

Artist: So I Shot Myself
Album: Self-Titled
Genre: Metalcore
Year: 2008
Label: Manicidic Records
From: Union County, NJ

Track Listing:

1. Bloodrust Paintbrush (2008)
2. 200 Burnside Ave
3. Call It Suicide
4. Break Your Fucking Face
5. Never Forget (2008)
6. I Watched Her Die
7. Till The Casket Drops

And here we have yet another metalcore band that kicked ass live, recorded a great EP and due to personal differences between band members, broke up shortly after and it was never properly released. A limited run, however, was issued in 2009 and was available through Manicidic Records, at select shows in NJ and at the SISM reunion show in 2010. Recorded at Trax East Studios and mastered by Alan Douches at West West Side Studios. I always wondered what could have been... thoughts??

Anaal Nathrakh- Passion (2011)

Artist: Anaal Nathrakh
Album: Passion
Genre: Grind/Black Metal
Year: 2011

1. The Unbearable Filth Of The Soul
2. The Lucifer Effect
3. Blood Eagles Carves on the Backs of Innocents
4. Volenti Non Fit Iniuria
5. Drug Fucking Abomination
6. Post Traumatic Stress Euphoria
7. Le Diabolique Est L'ami Du Simple
8. Locus of Damnation
9. Tod Huetet Uebel
10. Paragon Pariah
11. Who Thinks of the Executioner
12. Ashes Screaming Silence
13. Portrait of the Artist

I think Passion is the 7th full length from these grinding mad men. Following more or less the same formula from the previous 2 or 3 releases isnt necessarily a bad thing. Anaal Nathrakh reaches another step toward grind/black metal fusion perfection. Blistering speed, dark buzzing tone use and a deafening blend of heavy vocal distortion and cleans make anthems out of a few tracks, see Paragon Pariah...

12. The Gates to the Spirit Kingdom

13. Void of Satanic Darkness

1. Intro/ Rites of the Black Herald

2. Nightrealm

3. Ghosts of the Moonlight Mist (1996)

Chilling black metal from the cold harsh depths of... New Jersey? Well actually, hell yea, in the mid to late 90's Abazagorath were delivering just that, blistering black metal with hints of thrash and death, corpsepaint and all. Coming onto the "scene" in 1996 with the release of the demo 'Channelling the Ethereal Moon' they had instantly proved to whoever was listening that they were not fucking around. 'Tenebrarum Cadent Exsurgemus' is their brutal 1997 full length follow up and does not disappoint. Check both out here:

The Odious - That Night A Forest Grew (2011)

Artist: The Odious

Album: That Night A Forest Grew

Genre: Progressive Metalcore

Year: 2011

Track Listing:

1. Entmoot

2. Threads

3. Contemplating Utopia

4. Last Night A Forest Grew (Part 1)

5. Last Night A Forest Grew (Part 2)

An unexpected gem upon the sea of metalcore EP's I've heard recently. Recorded in 2010 and released in 2011'That Night A Forest Grew' gripped me from the get go because of the cover art alone. Smart, progressive metalcore, straight up. These guys really took the time to write a memorable EP. Fans of BTBAM and The Contortionist should check this one out.
